Our Stories

A Renewed Commitment to Education, Equality, & Safety

The murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd have shocked everyone with a conscience. Moreover, the disturbing, brutal responses to protestors by some federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies have illuminated the myriad injustices that still pervade our society. We at Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF) have heard the outcries in our community and across the country, and we echo these demands for justice. We all must demand that our country live up to its high ideals—and we all must find a way to do our part, too.

Despite these gut-wrenching days, we feel a great sense of optimism for our collective futures. We are heartened to see people from all walks of life, all ages, all backgrounds and ethnicities, demandIng justice and accountability. As an organization devoted to supporting quality public education in our community, we are especially proud of the many students here and around the country who are finding their voices and speaking truth to power.

We strongly believe that our country cannot heal until every one of us is treated fairly and equitably and protected by the laws and institutions that govern our country. Therefore, when we talk about a return to “normal,” we do not believe that we can ever return to the “normal” we knew only a few weeks ago. Nor do we want to. The “new normal” we achieve in the coming weeks, months, and years, MUST come with a renewed commitment to equality and safety in this country and in our community. Thus, we wholeheartedly commit to continuing our fight for equity in public education, and we vow our continued support for justice for all.

PEF was established 50 years ago in part because of the decision by PUSD to bring equity to African American students in Pasadena. Our commitment to properly funded public education and a shared recognition of its essential function in a healthy democratic society have always been our priority. As we move toward our “new normal,” PEF will continue to support public education in Pasadena by funding programs and initiatives, and supporting teachers and students. With our commitment to justice and equity, we will support our schools as we evolve toward a healthier and stronger democracy.
