The Pasadena Tournament of Roses and the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation celebrated the Big Day for Teachers by recognizing Octavia E. Butler teacher Cassandra Nevarez for her accomplishments. Big Day for Teachers is a part of the CPF Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers Week, which celebrates educators across the country. At the event, Nevarez was honored with a $1,000 DonorsChoose gift card to put towards educational resources.
Nevarez is an accomplished music educator and musician whose leadership has transformed the music program at Octavia E. Butler Magnet. She earned her Bachelor of Music from Biola University and her Master of Music in Violin Performance from California State University, Los Angeles. She completed her master’s degree while teaching full time and working part time, reflecting the same dedication, perseverance, and commitment to growth that she inspires in her students.
Since joining OEB in 2020, Nevarez has expanded access to music education for her school and built a thriving program where students develop musicianship, confidence, collaboration, and a strong sense of belonging. Under her leadership, OEB’s orchestra program has grown from just seven students to more than 60 students across two full classes, while the band program has expanded its presence through concerts, community parades, and other performances. In 2026, she was named a finalist for the CMA Foundation’s Music Teacher of Excellence Award, recognizing her outstanding impact and dedication to music education.
In her classroom, Nevarez maintains high expectations while ensuring students see themselves as capable musicians. Through music, her students develop perseverance, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and confidence that extend well beyond the classroom.Through her passion, artistry, and leadership, Nevarez has made music a cornerstone of the OEB community and continues to help young people find their voice through music.
