The Science Fiction Festival at Octavia E. Butler Magnet School was a day full of imagination, discovery, and community, and behind the scenes, PEF volunteers were there to help make it all run smoothly.
The festival was packed with energy from start to finish. Students and their families explored a wide range of booths and demonstrations from exhibitors like JPL, Occidental College, and Remainders Creative Reuse, with something exciting around every corner. As they made their way through the event, students collected passport stamps at each stop, and once their passports were filled, they could head to the school library to trade them in for prizes, giving the day a sense of adventure that kept excitement high throughout. The day also featured a showcase of original student work, where young writers and artists displayed short stories and artwork inspired by the legacy of Octavia E. Butler herself. It was a reminder of just how much creative talent lives inside Butler Magnet’s walls.
From staffing exhibitor booths to facilitating discussion panels, PEF volunteers were woven into the fabric of the event. They guided students through demonstrations, supported presenters, and made sure families had a smooth and welcoming experience from start to finish.
The result was a festival that celebrated student creativity and curiosity, and none of it would have come together the same way without the people who gave their time to bring it to life.
