Thank you Edison International for supporting our PUSD students by working through PEF to provide $2,500 scholarships to two Muir High School students through the Edison Scholars program
The Edison Scholars program is designed to help minority, low-income and under-represented students in Southern California pay for college studies in STEM fields, helping them develop skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the workforce of the future.
Meet our 2016 Edison Scholars
After graduating from the Engineering and Environmental Science Academy at John Muir High, Jose Gomez (L) and Jose Munoz (R) will be pursuing college and careers in mechanical engineering at California State University, Los Angeles this summer and fall. A scholarship from Edison International of $2500 each will help them pursue their dreams.
Jose Gomez’s family earned a few hundred dollars more than the eligibility threshold for significant financial aid, which for a family of four is about the same as tuition at USC for one year. So, although he was accepted to UCLA, he felt that it would be better to save and potentially transfer to Cal Poly Pomona. This scholarship, his first cash award, will make a big difference.
Jose Munoz came to John Muir as an English learner, but with the help of teacher Roland Bynum, he mastered English well enough to be “reclassified” and excel in STEM, particularly electrical and mechanical engineering.
