Our panel will include:

Dr. Pedro Noguera is one of the nation’s leading scholars on issues related to race, inequality and education. Prior to coming to USC to serve as the Emery Stoops and Joyce King Stoops Dean of the Rossier School of Education, he was a Distinguished Professor of Education and holder of endowed chairs at UCLA, NYU, Harvard University, and the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of 15 books. His most recent book, A Search for Common Ground: Conversations About the Tough Questions and Complex Issues Confronting K-12 Education in the United States Today with Rick Hess, was the winner of the American Association of Publishers Prose Award in 2021. Noguera is the son of Caribbean immigrants and is proud of his roots in Brooklyn, NY. He is the father of five, grandfather of five, and a lover of books, sports, gardening, travel, and cooking.

Dr. Hayin Kimner is a practitioner, researcher and policy advocate with a focus on community schools systems and partnerships. Currently, she is the Founder and Managing Director for the CA Community Schools Learning Exchange, and a Senior Policy and Research Fellow for Policy Analysis for California Education. Hayin is also a nonresident scholar in the Global Economy and Development program at the Brookings Institution in support of the Community Schools Forward national task force. She previously worked as a Senior Program Director for The Opportunity Institute, and led the development of district-wide community school strategies in San Francisco and Emery Unified School Districts.  She received her B.A. from Amherst College and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Dr. Brian McDonald is the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Superintendent. Dr. McDonald previously served as the district’s Chief Academic Officer. A fluent Spanish speaker, Dr. McDonald has a Master’s in Education Administration from Texas Southern University, a certification in principalship from Harvard Graduate School, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Sam Houston State University.

Reyna Uka is a Spanish Dual Language Arts teacher at Octavia Butler Magnet. Having taught in Pasadena Unified for the last six  years, she is in her 15th year as an educator. Previously Ms. Uka taught in Los Angeles in both the middle and high school settings. She has an  Administration Services credential and a Masters in Educational Administration.

Scott Harden is the father of two daughters who have attended Pasadena public schools. In addition to serving as Executive Board President of the PTA Council of PUSD, which oversees operation and leadership of all 20 PTAs within the District, Mr. Harden is also a leader of the PUSD Strategic Planning Culture and Climate Committee and serves as a member of the LCAP Parent Advisory Committee. Professionally, he is a service designer, leading strategic change and transformation projects, for both for-profit and nonprofit clients.

Mya Hernandez is a senior in the Graphics and Communications Academy at Pasadena High School (PHS). They are the first chair viola in the PHS orchestra and a member of the Pasadena Unified School District’s Student Think Tank. Mya deeply loves music, making art, and learning. Outside of school, they like to play Dungeons and Dragons with friends and go thrifting. They love to spend time with their family and interact with nature. Mya hopes to major in STEM at a college in California.
