An Icon of Soul and Self-Expression: Donor Spotlight on Charles Wright

Musician donates over a quarter of a million dollars towards the arts, Eaton Fire relief, and scholarships

Originally shouted to simply excite a crowd during an encore musical performance, the phrase “express yourself” became Charles Wright’s mantra for life. The release of the funk song “Express Yourself” was ahead of its time, as we see more than ever a diverse and expressive society.

Upon hearing about the devastation of the January 2025 Eaton Fire and its effect on the Altadena community, he contacted friend Roland Bynum, a teacher at John Muir High School, to offer support. Mr. Wright met Mr. Bynum in 1970 when he worked as a disc jockey and radio program director for Los Angeles radio station KGFJ. Mr. Wright supports the arts and recognizes the importance of having a voice, especially amid hardship. He has been able to capture and share his journey in his recent book Express Yourself, which can be purchased on Amazon.com.

In view of his values, he requested that his donation touch specific needs of the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD). Mr. Wright’s generous donation will go to PUSD Arts and Music, Scholarships for graduating seniors, and Eaton Fire Relief efforts in the schools.

We genuinely express our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Wright for his generosity and inspiring legacy.

When our community comes together, students thrive.
We invite you to give today.
