Families, neighbors, and community partners filled the Madison Elementary campus with laughter and gratitude during this year’s Harvesting Connections event, a joyful gathering that celebrated the power of partnership across the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD). The event reflects PUSD’s Community Schools approach, which brings together educators, families, and local organizations to ensure every student has the support and opportunities needed to learn and thrive.
Through a generous donation from the Smart & Final Charitable Foundation, in partnership with the Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF), 500 families, including those impacted by the Eaton Fire and from Title 1 schools, received complete Thanksgiving meal packages with turkeys and all the fixings. The morning was filled with activity and connection as families enjoyed crafts, games, and resources offered by local partners who share a common goal: helping students and families flourish year-round.
Inside Madison’s auditorium, rows of pre-packed meal bags awaited families, each assembled with care and distributed by Smart & Final area managers who volunteered their time to be part of the day. Their presence brought an extra measure of kindness and warmth, turning a simple act of giving into a shared moment of gratitude and community. Adding to the hospitality, Smart & Final partner Don Francisco’s Coffee served free coffee drinks to attendees throughout the morning.
The celebration also showcased the strong network of partners that make PUSD’s Community Schools thrive, including Collaborate Pasadena, Day One Pasadena, the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena, Harambee Ministries, and the PTSA Council of PUSD. Together, they provided families with information, encouragement, and access to ongoing supports beyond the holiday season.
Guests were treated to special performances by Madison’s Folklórico dancers and other student groups, bringing energy and pride to the celebration. School Board Members Jennifer Hall Lee, Michelle Bailey-Richardson, and Scott Harden were in attendance, along with PUSD Chief Academic Officer Dr. Helen Hill and Dr. Shannon Mumolo, Director of Magnet Schools, Enrollment, and Community Engagement. The event was organized by Veronica Alcantar, Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA II) for Community Schools, whose thoughtful coordination brought partners and volunteers together in service of families.
This annual Community Schools event is a wonderful reflection of what can happen when schools and community partners come together around students and families. “We’re grateful to Smart & Final Charitable Foundation and to everyone who helped make the day such a meaningful start to the holiday season,” said Patrick Conyers, Executive Director of the Pasadena Educational Foundation.
For families still recovering from the Eaton Fire and for those navigating financial challenges, this event offered more than holiday nourishment. It was a day of togetherness and encouragement, a reminder that in the Greater Pasadena area, families never stand alone.
As the holidays approach, PEF and its partners remain committed to building connections that strengthen families, foster resilience, and help every PUSD student thrive.
