Western Asset Volunteers Bring Care and Creativity to PUSD Schools During Franklin Templeton’s Impact Days

As part of Franklin Templeton’s global Impact Days initiative, Western Asset volunteers stepped up in June 2025 to support Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) students and families through two meaningful projects in partnership with the Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF).

Restoring Dignity Through Care Kits

On June 25, Western Asset employees assembled 200 full-sized toiletry kits for families impacted by the January Eaton Fire. These kits, packed with brand-new essentials like toothpaste, shampoo, and washcloths, were designed to restore comfort and dignity for families navigating recovery. Volunteers gathered at Western Asset’s Pasadena office to sort donations and prepare kits for immediate distribution.

Painting a Legacy of Science at Thurgood Marshall

The next day, June 26, Western Asset volunteers brought their creativity to Thurgood Marshall Secondary School (formerly Marshall Fundamental) by helping paint science-themed murals in the school’s Science Building. Led by arts teacher and muralist Luis Rendon and supported by a Pasadena Tournament of Roses grant, the mural project celebrates the school’s 100-year legacy while promoting STEM learning through vibrant, inspiring visuals.

Over the course of two shifts, volunteers worked alongside PUSD staff, educators, recent Marshall graduates and families to bring the murals to life—leaving behind a colorful contribution to a campus that prepares students for the future through rigorous academics and creative expression.

“Impact Days give us an opportunity to step outside of the office and connect with our community in a meaningful way,” said Brandon Joel, Director of Investment Risk & Innovation at Western Asset. “It’s incredibly rewarding to support local schools and families, especially during times of recovery and renewal.”

Franklin Templeton’s Impact Days empower employees around the world to give back to their communities—and Western Asset’s Pasadena-based efforts are a shining example. Through care, creativity, and collaboration, their volunteer efforts made a lasting impact on local families and schools.

PEF is proud to partner with Western Asset and Franklin Templeton to support public education in Pasadena.
