Reflections from a Food Distribution Visit by Chris Perez, PEF Development Assistant
Last week, I visited one of the food distribution events supported by PEF volunteers. The effort took place during morning drop-off and, in just about 30 minutes, a small team distributed fresh produce, King’s Hawaiian bread, and pre-packed food bags to dozens of families.
Katia from PUSD’s Health and Wellness programs was there with a parent and student volunteer. Drivers were asked how many people were in their household and where to place the food—no one needed to get out of the car. It was smooth, efficient, and met with sincere appreciation from every family.
Coordinating these events takes planning—securing early support from Food and Nutrition Services, arranging deliveries, and navigating all the moving pieces. The need is ongoing. Beyond financial strain and pandemic recovery, many families are still managing the added challenges of displacement from the Eaton Fire.
One driver stood out to me. We went to high school together and said he was picking up for a household of seven. It was a reminder that the people we support are our neighbors, classmates, and community members—doing their best in difficult circumstances.
These events may be quick, but they matter. I’m grateful to be part of the ongoing work to meet real needs in our schools and neighborhoods.
Special Thanks to King’s Hawaiian for donating food to our families. And to everyone who supports PEF!
