Celebrating Excellence and Empowering Educators at PUSD’s Welcome Back Event

The Pasadena Educational Foundation hosted the Welcome Back event for the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at Pasadena High School. This annual gathering celebrated educators and staff as they prepare for the new academic year, welcoming approximately 2,200 PUSD employees.

Event Overview

Thank you to the community businesses who made this celebration of the return to school possible:

  • Lead Sponsor: California Credit Union, which provided awards and gift cards for each awardee.
  • Sponsors: Planet Fitness, Pasadena Federal Credit Union, Superb Dental, SchoolsFirst Credit Union, UnitedHealthcare, NTA Life, First Financial Credit Union, New York Life, and Aflac.
  • Food Sponsors: Starbucks Store #25717/Foothill & San Gabriel donated all coffee, Pavilions provided all water, and Guisados and B.C. Donuts provided breakfast.

The event included performances by a student drum line and cheer squad, followed by breakfast and networking opportunities for staff.

Outstanding Achievements Recognized

PUSD honored several individuals and groups for their contributions:

  • Teacher of the Year: Robyn Werhly, SDC teacher at Octavia E. Butler Magnet
  • Principal of the Year: Elisa Perez, Ed.D., Madison Elementary
  • Classified Employee of the Year: Yvonne Garcia, Human Resources Department Substitute Desk
  • Volunteer of the Year: Nia Harris Bailey, AAPC Vice Chair
  • Superintendent Awards: Warren Skidmore for the PTA Science Fair and Emilia Sanchez, Manager of Administrative Services

Empowering Professional Development

Following the awards ceremony, PUSD staff participated in a day of professional development that included innovative workshops and discussions. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Jerell Hill, Dean of the School of Human Development and Education at Pacific Oaks College, who inspired attendees with his insights. Patrick Conyers, Executive Director of the Pasadena Educational Foundation, emphasized the importance of celebrating and investing in educators, stating, “Today we celebrate excellence and invest in our educators and staff. Their dedication shapes our students’ futures, and we are committed to supporting their growth.” PUSD school board members attended to honor the awardees and reinforce the community’s commitment to fostering a supportive educational environment.

Looking Ahead

As the PUSD community prepares for the new school year, Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Blanco expressed gratitude for the dedication of teachers and staff. She acknowledged the sponsors for their vital role in making the event a success, highlighting the importance of celebrating educational excellence and fostering a brighter future for all PUSD students.
