Last summer our 176 high school and college volunteers shared so much with me about their experiences as young leaders in our Summer Enrichment Program, supporting teachers and students in our K-8 classes. I was hugely impressed with the amount of personal growth and skill acquisition they were gaining through their service! I also learned what they feel they still need to be successful. Their feedback inspired me to imagine what more I can build into their experience to support their ability to make an impact on the community, and also to realize our mission at PEF to make an impact on them.
To that end, I am working to create more volunteer support at school sites and am collaborating with community partners to design a leadership training module and service learning component focusing on communication and relationship building, diversity awareness, socio-emotional and educational development, and skill-building for college and career readiness.
I am so excited to have the opportunity to provide these amazing young people with more tools to be successful in their service with us, and also to empower them for greater impact in their own peer communities and agency in their lives.
