We are currently seeking highschool students entering 9th grade and up to serve as Volunteer Classroom Assistants in our 2017 Summer Enrichment Program. Volunteers will have the opportunity to explore career options in teaching and administration, serve as “experts” and mentors to younger students in their chosen field whether it be art, math, robotics or rock band, gain professional working experience and fulfill community service hours required for graduation.* Weekly group meetings will provide a forum for students to discuss the challenges they face taking a leadership role in the classroom.
Summer 2017 marks our pilot internship program. Students with a demonstrated track record of volunteerism with PEF can apply for competitive summer internships between their 11th and 12th grade years. A limited and variable number of paid internships will be offered each year. Priority placement will be given to PUSD students through College and Career Pathway Academies.
The Summer Enrichment Program runs 8-12:00 Monday-Thursday for 5 weeks, June 12-July 13, 2017. Volunteers can sign up for two to five weeks of the program.
*PUSD counts towards graduation only those hours served after a student's 9th grade year. It is never too early, however, to demonstrate one's committement to community service. Building a "resume" of experience early on increases student access to more and better opportunities as they progress.
