Principal: Dr. Merian Stewart

Dr. Merian Stewart is in her fifth year as principal of Washington Middle School, where she leads the implementation of PUSD’s Excellent Middle Schools reforms.  Dr. Stewart was previously Washington’s assistant principal.  She was principal of Noyes Elementary and began her career as an elementary school teacher in PUSD.  She earned an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Change from The Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara, California; a Master’s in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College; and a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development from California State University Los Angeles.

In November 2012, Washington Middle School was changed to Washington STEAM Magnet Academy.  Our curriculum courses, instruction and assessment align with the Common Core Standards, 21stCentury skills and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) competencies.  The lessons are well-defined, embed critical thinking and problem solving, innovation, and invention. We instruct our students using Project Based Learning (PBL).  Our specialized programs include Project Lead the Way-Gateway to Technology, Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), College Access Plan (CAP), and Response to Intervention (RTI).

Principal for a Day: Mark Langill
Team Historian and Publications Editor Los Angeles Dodgers

Mark Langill is the Publications Editor and Team Historian of the Los Angeles Dodgers. A member of the front office since 1994, Langill previously covered the ballclub for the Pasadena Star-News from 1989 to 1993. The South Pasadena native attended Pasadena City College and graduated from Cal State Northridge with a degree in journalism. He is the author of five books about the Dodgers and his television appearances include the Major League Baseball production “Cathedrals of the Game: Dodger Stadium,” the ESPN 30-for-30 documentary “Fernando Nation,” and History Channel’s “American Restoration
